Once you’ve had a hearing test and determined that a hearing aid will be of benefit to you, there are several kinds of hearing aids that may be recommended. Hearing aids vary in size, shape and colour as well as in how they’re worn and what features and technology they offer. Hearing aids can be worn behind the ear (referred to as BTE), have a receiver in the canal (RIC), be worn in the ear (ITE), in the ear canal (ITC), and completely in the ear canal (CIC).
Each hearing aid type has its own advantages. The professional Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioners at our Beltone Hearing Care Centre locations are happy to answer any questions and to make recommendations for what type of hearing aid will work best for you.
Here are some of the options:
BTE Hearing Aids - One advantage of a BTE model is its slightly larger size, which may be important for those who would have difficulty handling smaller units. These hearing aids tend to be a little more conspicuous, but if that is not an issue for you, they are a common choice for many of our clients with hearing loss.
The RIC hearing aid models fit the microphone and amplifier of the hearing aid behind the ear however the receiver is inside a custom mold that fits in the ear canal. These are very discreet options that offer superior sound quality.
ITE hearing aids offer a custom formed shell that fits in the outer ear. These hearing aids are easy to put in and easy to use with the phone, however for those who prefer a stealthier style, they are a little more conspicuous.
ITC hearing aids are also custom formed to fit inside the ear canal so they’re very discreet and can include features like directional microphones. Ensuring that the settings are customized for you personally is part of the fitting process to get the best results.
CIC hearing aids are worn completely in the ear canal. For those who really want a hearing aid model that is virtually unnoticeable, this is a popular choice. Much like your natural hearing, the outer ear funnels sounds to the hearing aid which then processes the sound to meet your specific hearing requirements.
